Transformers: Age of Extinction – Release Date 6/27/2014

Transformers: Age of Extinction – This has the potential to be one of the best films in 2014. A mechanic bent on changing he and his daughter’s lives, gets his hands on what he thinks is a junked truck. He plans to refurbish it and put it to use. But what he has found is much more than just an old clunker. What he soon realizes is that he has a transformer in his work shed. But that’s not all – he has found Optimus Prime. The time of the transformer is over, or so the government thinks. The government sees no need for them any longer and they are actively being decommissioned. That is, until a thread comes from the sky.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Release Date 7/11/2014

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - The apes are back in this movie the touches upon the concept of what it means to be human. Remember the virus that was released in the last movie? This movie picks up where it left off, only 10 years later. The virus wiped out much of humanity but a band of survivors traipsing through the woods stumble upon apes that have made a thriving community for themselves. These genetically evolved apes are led by non-other than Caesar. While an understanding is forged, it is tentative. The two species clash in an unforgettable and emotional climax that will resonate with you long after the movie is over.

Hercules - Release Date 7/25/2014

Hercules - The precursor to greatness – to immortality.  Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson (“The Rock”), chronicles the legendary Hercules before he became the man of lore.  We see the Greek demigod as he is after suffering the twelve labors.  He serves as a hired hand and is ultimately challenged by the King of Thrace when he is asked to go against a warlord.  Battling mythical being like a three-headed world of a two-headed serpent lurking in an impossibly eerie swamp, Hercules must prove his mettle time and time again.  Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of this warrior turned legend is befitting; his countenance and physical specimen match the very image of a Greek God.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Release Date 8/1/2014

Guardians of the Galaxy - Funny and action-packed Guardians of the Galaxy is a refreshing take on a pseudo-series premise.  A band of misfits led by Peter Quill find themselves being hunted because of a stolen orb.  Did they steal it?  Well, sure, but that is only part of the fun.  Zoe Saldana joins Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista of WWE fame, Rocket Racoon and Groot (voiced by Bradley cooper and Vin Diesel respectively) in protecting the orb, which controls the fate of the universe. I see Guardians of the Galaxy as possibly one of the best movies of 2014 if it lives of to its hype.

Lets Be Cops - Release Date 8/13/2014

Lets Be Cops - Do you know the saying “Don’t let it get good to you?”  If there was ever an example of something getting good to you, this is it.  Two friends find themselves at a crossroads in life.  Unsure of how they got to their current state, they decide to lighten their spirits by going to a costume party as police officers.  People loved it!  The costumes and the way they embodied the role made an impact… so they decided to keep it up.  They added more to their uniform, o0utfitted a car, and patrolled the neighborhood routinely all the while wondering how much longer they planned to carry on the charade. The chemistry between Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson is electric.  They play off each other, making the movie seem more like a day ion the life than a screenplay.

As Above So Below - Release Date 8/15/2014

As Above So Below - Students on an archaeological adventure determine that a piece of history lies right beneath the ground in Paris, France. They decide to access it using the catacombs, which house the remains of millions of people dating back from 1785. Bones staked upon each other and skulls lining the walls to greet people I narrow passages are only some of the horrors that meet the archaeologists. There is something else down there – something that knows them intimately and can tap into their fears. Once they lose their way in the windy passages that entity comes to life, bringing with it the fears they harbor deep inside.

The Drop - Release Date 9/17/2014

The Drop - The unwritten rules are often the most lethal.  An old neighborhood’s unwritten rules are unearthed when a robbery goes the wrong way.  The collective agreement between friends and foes, families and businessmen erodes as the thread that holds them together frays.  Who stands up for whom?  Who double-crosses whom?  Can the old agreement ever be forged again?  The Drop is the quintessential neighborhood gang film.  It evokes emotions that lay dormant most of the time except when your loved one is challenged.  See James Gandolfini of The Sopranos in his last role.

The Equalizer – Release Date 9/26/2014

top films 2014

The Equalizer - Denzel Washington is back and he brings with him a fresh take on the 1980s television show drama of the same name. In the film version Washington plays a former black ops commando who escaped the chaos of his world by faking his own death. He opted, instead, for a nice retirement in Boston… that is, until his attempt to rescue a young girl puts him in danger with Russian tough guys. The Equalizer marks the reunion of the dream team of Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua. This pairing proved successful in 2001 when Washington won Best Actor for Training Day.
